Pet Nation Halloween Pet Costume Contest

The Annual Pet National Halloween Pet Costume contest draws competitors ranging from the biggest breeds of dogs to chinchillas and hermit crabs.

The event has grown exponentially since 15 animals competed in the first event in 2004. The event typically includes more than 150 pets in categories encompassing every kind of pet, reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets, and exotic pets.

Standouts from the last few years include a mastiff painted to look like a tiger, a hermit crab in a knitted pumpkin ensemble, and a gecko who tried to sell the judges some insurance with a well-decorated tank.

And crowds of spectators start lining up and vying for good spots in the roped off parking lot more than an hour before judging begins.

Pet Nation 8th Annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest is Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. at Pet Nation, 1890 Andorra St., Navarre, Fla.  To register or for more information, call Holly Elassaad 850-936-8201 or visit  www.petnation.org
